At Kastamonu Education and Research Hospital (KEAH), a multidisciplinary operation involving faculty members from Kastamonu University Faculty of Medicine successfully treated an advanced tumor case.
In a patient undergoing treatment due to a tumor, serious bone weakness and a hip fracture occurred as a result of the disease metastasizing to the hip area. Both the spread of the tumor and the existing bone loss were considered to be in the high-risk group for surgical intervention. Especially against the risk of severe bleeding that could occur during the operation, a critical intervention was performed by the Interventional Radiology team before the surgery.
In this challenging process, a multidisciplinary team consisting of faculty members from Kastamonu University Faculty of Medicine worked in coordination within KEAH. With the selective embolization method performed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İsmail Taşkent, a faculty member of the Radiology Department of the Internal Medicine Sciences Division at our university's Faculty of Medicine, occluded the blood vessels feeding the tumor, thereby controlling the risk of bleeding in the surgical area.
After this procedure, the Orthopedics and Traumatology team took over the operation. The surgical procedure performed by the faculty members of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Uğur, Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Sabır and their teams were involved in the removal of the tumor tissue and the application of a hip prosthesis to the patient.
The patient, whose postoperative follow-up process progressed positively, was mobilized and walked within a short period. The operation, carried out through the coordinated efforts of expert teams from Kastamonu University Faculty of Medicine and KEAH, was a significant success in the treatment of complex cases in the region.
