The invention titled "Production Method of Biochar with Magnetic Properties from Pea Shells by Hydrothermal Method," developed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Didar Değermenci and Neslihan Kader, faculty members of the Department of Environmental Engineering at Kastamonu University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, have been registered as a patent by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office.
Under the patent, an innovative method has been developed for producing magnetic biochar from pea pods, considered agricultural waste, using a hydrothermal process. The invention in question aims to contribute to environmentally friendly, sustainable production by enabling the conversion of agricultural waste into high-value products.
Using the developed method, pea pods, an agricultural waste, are converted into magnetically active biochar via a hydrothermal process. The aim is for this special biochar, obtained from the process, to be used as a catalyst in water treatment systems to remove pollutants.
The biochar produced can be easily separated after the process using a magnet due to its magnetic properties. Thus, while the material can be reused, it also helps reduce costs and prevent secondary environmental pollution. While recovering powdered catalysts used in traditional biochar applications is challenging, the developed method facilitates recycling, making a significant contribution to sustainable environmental technologies.
Additionally, the produced magnetic biochar demonstrates effective removal of resistant pollutants due to its large surface area and porous structure. With this feature, the invention is anticipated to be evaluated not only in water treatment but also across various environmental applications.
Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, in his evaluation of the success achieved, stated that our University continues its work in line with the goal of transforming scientific research into social benefit, and congratulated Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe Didar Değermenci and Neslihan Kader on the patent registration, wishing them continued success.
