As a result of the scientific studies conducted by Assist.Prof.Dr. Cihan Cılbırcıoğlu, a faculty member of the Plant and Animal Production Department at Kastamonu University, Devrekani TOBB Vocational School of Higher Education, discovered a new mite species in acarology and added it to the literature.
Within the scope of the research, samples obtained from field studies conducted around the historical Paflagonya Rock Tomb in the Daday district of Kastamonu were subjected to detailed taxonomic examinations. As a result of the examinations, a previously scientifically undescribed mite species was identified. The new species was recorded in the scientific literature as Kunstidamaeus paphlagonicus sp. nov. in accordance with international zoological naming rules.
The name "paphlagonicus" given to the species refers to the ancient region of Paphlagonia, which includes Kastamonu. Thus, the region's historical and geographical identity was included in the international literature with the scientific name of the newly discovered species.
The scientific article on the study jointly conducted by Assist.Prof.Dr. Cihan Cılbırcıoğlu and Dr. Vasily Kolesnikov, a researcher from the Russian Academy of Sciences, published their work in the May 2026 issue of the international peer-reviewed journal Systematic & Applied Acarology, which is in the field of acarology.
"The natural riches of Kastamonu are being documented through scientific studies."
In his evaluations on the subject, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, stated that our University continues to support scientific studies across different disciplines and international academic collaborations.
Our Rector stated that the study contributes to documenting Türkiye's biological richness and to the inclusion of Kastamonu's natural treasures in the scientific literature, adding, "Such research conducted through international collaborations also contributes to our University's research capacity." He congratulated the scholars who participated in the study and wished them continued success.
