The results of the UI GreenMetric World Ranking 2025, which evaluates higher education institutions internationally in terms of environmental awareness and sustainability, have been announced.
Our university, which specializes in forestry and nature tourism in Turkey and is also recognized for its environmental protection efforts, ranked 217th among 1,745 universities from 105 countries in the UI GreenMetric 2025 World University Rankings.
Our university ranked 25th among 142 universities across Turkey. Thus, Kastamonu University climbed 104 places, moving from 321st place last year to 217th place. Additionally, our university is ranked 57th among 360 universities in Europe.
In the UI GreenMetric 2025 World Ranking, scoring was conducted in the following categories: Buildings and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Water, Waste, Transportation, and Education and Research. The total score our university received in these categories determined its position in the world rankings. Kastamonu University received full points, especially in the Waste Area category, in the 2025 evaluations, sharing the same score with 31 universities worldwide. In Turkey, it ranked first, along with five other universities.
This ranking aims to provide information on the current conditions and policies regarding universities' sustainability efforts and institutional improvements. The study is based on data collected through an online survey conducted at universities worldwide. By attracting the attention of university leaders and stakeholders with this ranking, it is expected that more emphasis will be placed on education and research in global climate change, clean energy, water conservation, waste recycling, green transportation, and sustainability.
Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, made evaluations regarding the ongoing studies in the field of environment and sustainability. Our Rector, emphasizing the importance of afforestation efforts, energy and water conservation, protection of green spaces, waste reduction, and recycling practices, stated that our University will resolutely continue its goal of developing environmentally friendly projects.
Our Rector continued her assessment with the following words: Stating that the annual increase in our university's sustainability performance is a result of the joint efforts of all academic and administrative units, she expressed that raising environmental awareness among all stakeholders, from students to personnel, is among the priority goals.
In this context, he noted that the infrastructure investments, scientific research, and social awareness studies carried out in this regard have transformed the culture of sustainability into an institutional identity.
